Taiwan police recently cracked a major cross-border fraud case, with a scam group operating remotely from Cambodia being successfully dismantled, 17 suspects were arrested, involving an amount as high as 73.12 million yuan.
The police reported that since June 2024, the gang has been inducing victims to add a so-called "investment assistant" LINE account through social media, and then guiding them to download a fake investment platform, sweeping the nation in just 8 months, with at least 5 victims suffering heavy losses.
The group is tightly organized, with multiple levels of "money laundering houses" domestically to transfer illicit funds, eventually channeling the money to Cambodia through virtual currency. The main culprit, Li, set up a server room locally, remotely directed the crime, and recruited Chinese-speaking Malaysian drivers in an attempt to use foreign identities to evade investigation.
After 8 months of investigation, the police launched 5 raids, destroying one money laundering house and one server room, seizing nearly 600,000 yuan in cash, 4 cars, as well as computers, designer bags, and paintings with gang implications known as "money-making paintings." Currently, including the main culprit, 7 people have been detained, and the case has been transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation.
The police remind that recently, "investment and financial management" scams are frequent, and criminals often lure the public with "guaranteed profit" and "insider information." The public should not easily believe in unfamiliar investment advice, nor should they casually download unknown investment platforms to avoid falling into scams.
