Another scandal erupts in Thai politics! On July 11, the opposition People's Power Party criticized the government, claiming that a member of parliament known as the "Online 888 MP," despite being closely associated with online gambling platforms, was appointed to a parliamentary special committee investigating money laundering, causing an uproar across all sectors.

Major General Piyachart, spokesperson for the People's Power Party, pointed out that although Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has recently been vocal about cracking down on transnational fraud and online gambling, and has applied to become the regional leader in combating cross-border crime in Southeast Asia, key figures linked to online gambling and fraud are still hidden within the ruling coalition.

The "888 MP," named for his prominence in the online gambling community, has always been suspected of deep ties with illegal platforms, yet he still received the significant task of investigating money laundering, leading to public doubts about the government's credibility and determination in combating illegal finance.

According to the People's Power Party, as early as May 2025, public opinion had already exposed several politicians, including this MP, as being closely connected to online gambling groups, but investigations have been slow to progress. Police actions are sluggish, and the involved platforms continue to operate, further enticing youth into gambling addiction.

What's more shocking is that some key suspects, despite having national arrest warrants issued against them, are still seen entering and exiting luxury hotels in Bangkok and even frequently active within the core circles of power. The spokesperson questioned: "The issue is not that the police are afraid to arrest, but whether the Prime Minister dares to act against his own people?"

This series of questions has led the government's anti-gambling and anti-fraud rhetoric into a dilemma of double standards. Now, the public's trust in the Thai government's credibility and anti-corruption sincerity is deeply worried, which may also affect international trust and investment enthusiasm towards Thailand.
