A person claiming to be a German security researcher stated responsibility for hacking into the Malta Gaming Authority system, allegedly obtaining sensitive data including operator compliance documents and player records. The "ethical hacker" named Lilith Wittmann posted on social media last week (later deleted), claiming to have evidence of the regulatory body's connections with organized crime in the Maltese gaming industry. In plain terms, it's a tech geek hacking into the regulatory system, claiming to expose the dark underbelly.

Prior offenses: Previously exposed data leak of 800,000 players from Germany's Merkur Gaming
Wittmann has previously been associated with "ethical hacking" in the gaming industry. In March 2025, she revealed a massive data leak of player data from a German gaming website operated by Merkur Gaming, exposing about 800,000 player accounts through unprotected API endpoints. At that time, she used GraphQL queries to obtain a vast amount of sensitive player data including banking details and registration information, raising questions about the operator and third-party supplier's player protection measures.
MGA's response: Accusations "baseless," condemns hacking activities
The MGA issued a statement on March 17 confirming that one of its systems was hacked, initiated an internal emergency protocol, and described the incident as "extremely serious." Wittmann admitted on March 20 in a tweet that she was the hacker and threatened to "expose your organized crime shelter chain created while you pose as a 'legitimate public service institution'." The MGA later condemned her statements in a release, describing such behavior as "unacceptable" and incompatible with lawful participation in public institutions and established governance frameworks, while emphasizing that Wittmann's accusations were "baseless" and would not damage MGA's role as a regulatory authority committed to transparency, due process, and the rule of law.
