South African gaming and hotel group Sun International is seeking to double the online market share of its Sun Bet brand from the current 4.5%, ranking fourth in the market. The company expects that by 2030, South Africa's online GGR will double to about 100 billion rand. The group's CEO stated that they will compete for shares more aggressively through product improvements and development. Simply put, it's about seizing the territory while the market is doubling.

Online business explosion: Sun Bet's annual revenue increased by 75.9%, and EBITDA doubled
The strong performance of Sun Bet offset the decline in the physical casino business. In the second half of the fiscal year 2025, Sun Bet's revenue soared by 79.8%, with annual revenue surging by 75.9% to 2.1 billion rand, and adjusted EBITDA increased by 109.6% to 744 million rand. Sports betting currently accounts for less than 15% of the brand's online GGR, but with product improvements, the company expects growth. The group's annual revenue reached 12.9 billion rand, up 7.1% year-on-year, with adjusted EBITDA at 3.4 billion rand.
Physical business under pressure: declined by 2.7% but market share rose to 46%
Although the revenue of physical casinos fell by 2.7% to 6.5 billion rand, and EBITDA decreased by 8.7%, Sun International still increased its market share by about 0.7 percentage points to 46% against an overall market decline of 6.3%. The fourth quarter GGR grew by 4%, the highest growth rate since the second quarter of 2023. The CEO described 2025 as a "year of transformation," with the company making progress in its plan to build a "market-leading omnichannel gaming company."
Personnel layout: Introducing CTO and COO to enhance capabilities
The company enhanced its capabilities by bringing in talent, with former Games Global CTO Leslie Peters joining as Chief Technology and Product Officer, and former Genting Casino Managing Director Mark Sergeant appointed as COO of the gaming division. The beginning of 2026 is off to a good start, consistent with the revenue growth trend in the second half of 2025. Interested in the latest developments in the African gaming market?
