Following an investigation by the Football Association (FA), West Ham United footballer Lucas Paqueta has been officially cleared of match-fixing charges, with the case being heard by an independent regulatory commission.
Paqueta was accused of committing match-fixing in four Premier League matches against Leicester City in November 2022, Aston Villa in March 2023, Leeds United in May 2023, and Bournemouth in August 2024.
"From the first day of the investigation, I have always maintained my innocence against these extremely serious allegations. I can't say much more now, but I want to express my gratitude to God and how eager I am to return to the football field with a smile," Paqueta said in a social media post after the verdict.
"To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who have always cheered for me, to my supportive family, friends, and legal team, thank you for everything you've done."
The FA stated that two charges against Paqueta for failing to cooperate with the investigation have been proven and that appropriate sanctions will be implemented "as soon as possible."
The association also explained that it is still awaiting a written response from the independent regulatory commission on how it reached its final decision, and will not comment further at the time of writing this article.
West Ham United's vice-chairman Karren Brady spoke about the decision, stating: "We are delighted that Lucas has been cleared of the charges. He has maintained his innocence from the beginning, and as a club, we have steadfastly supported him throughout the process."
Despite the immense pressure, Lucas continues to deliver outstanding performances for the club every week, always giving his all. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has always maintained absolute professionalism. Now, like everyone at West Ham United, he looks forward to moving past this experience.
The investigation into Paqueta began in August 2023, as the West Ham United player was accused of violating betting regulations in May 2024 and could have faced a lifetime ban from the FA.
