Before Caesar took over, MGM properties opened a new sports betting hall in Ohio.

Caesars Entertainment has placed a new piece on the board in Northeast Ohio. The Northfield Park Racino, located near Cleveland, has just completed a $546 million ownership transfer from MGM to the private equity firm Clairvest Group, and Caesars immediately opened a brand-new retail sports betting hall on the property. The pace of this three-party relay was tight—the property briefly closed for a brand switch and reopened, with Caesars' sports betting debuting simultaneously. MGM initially bought this asset from Hard Rock International in 2019 and rebranded it, now choosing to cash out at a high point. MGM's CFO Jonathan Halkyard was pragmatic in the transaction statement: divesting a non-strategic regional asset, with the proceeds used to strengthen the balance sheet, selectively invest in growth opportunities, and reward shareholders. Caesars just caught this entry opportunity for the Cleveland sports fan market.

LED screens and self-service terminals penetrate the heartland of sports fans

The newly opened Caesars sports betting hall targets an integrated experience of offline viewing and betting. A large LED video wall is used for live broadcasting of events, with five manned betting windows and round-the-clock self-service terminals operating simultaneously, all bets accumulating Caesars membership points. The venue is deeply integrated with Caesars' digital platform, allowing users to complete deposit and withdrawal operations directly through the mobile app. Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital Business, summarized the location advantage of Northfield Park as "guarding outside Cleveland," considering the city's sports fans among the most fervent in the US, and this store perfectly combines leading technology with a lively on-site atmosphere.

Kevin Brady, General Manager of Northfield Park, evaluated this collaboration from the perspective of existing business formats within the venue. He revealed that the sports betting hall will complement the existing Overtime Sports Bar in the venue, overall enhancing the completeness of the sports viewing and entertainment experience.

From Ohio to Las Vegas Boulevard, Caesars' offline retail accelerates its network expansion

Northfield Park is Caesars' second retail sports betting foothold in Ohio, having previously operated physical betting business at Scioto Downs Casino in Columbus and maintained a partnership with the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers. During the Cavaliers' playoff season, Caesars plans to host a viewing party at the new store, including appearances by retired stars and fan promotions. In addition to offline expansion, Caesars also plans to take over the operation of the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas later this year, adding more parlay options, live betting channels, and deploying self-service terminals throughout the property. Since launching its mobile sports betting app in 2021, Caesars has gradually added features such as same-game parlays, player performance markets, futures markets, and live in-play betting, with a universal digital wallet now live in 27 jurisdictions.

PASA official website continues to track the integration dynamics of North American sports betting retail and digital channels, noting that Caesars' takeover after MGM's exit essentially uses a relatively light-asset approach—replacing property ownership with brand cooperation and operational agreements—to accelerate regional market coverage. When asset prices are high, this method of not buying properties but only expanding the operational network is becoming the new pace of regional expansion for leading operators.
