Survey: Nearly one-sixth of Swedes played online casinos in 2025, 18% used unlicensed sites

The latest survey by the Swedish Gambling Alliance Casinofeber shows that by 2025, nearly one-sixth of Swedes (18%) have played online casino games, and about one-fifth (24%) have engaged in online betting. The survey covered 3463 people and conducted an in-depth analysis of 1004 active players. Simply put, one in every six Swedes has played in an online casino, and nearly two in ten have visited the black market.

Player Profile: Gender and age differentiation, overall moderate consumption

The survey found significant differences between casino players and betting players. Among betting players, males account for 62%, while the gender ratio among casino players is nearly even (males 55%). The average age of players is between their thirties and forties, and most have full-time jobs. Monthly spending is generally moderate, with most players spending less than 99 Swedish kronor or between 200 to 999 kronor. Only 17% of casino players and 10% of betting players spend over 1000 kronor per month. Slot machines are the preferred choice for casino players (49%), while football betting leads in sports betting (63%).

Black Market Risks: 65% of players do not know how to identify licensed operators

The survey highlights a significant gap in consumer awareness of the gambling black market. A whopping 65% of online casino players admit they do not know how to determine if an operator is licensed by Swedish authorities, and 18% confess to using unlicensed gambling sites. This data corresponds with the Swedish Gambling Authority's report of an 85% channelization rate in 2024. The survey also found that about 35% of casino players have used bonuses, with 27% encountering difficulties mainly due to unclear terms and withdrawal obstacles. Slightly more than half of the respondents think the withdrawal process is smooth, but there is still a significant minority who face problems.

Regulatory Tightening: Strengthening enforcement, proposing differentiated tax rates

As the survey is published, the Swedish regulatory framework is undergoing adjustments. By the end of 2025, the government has appointed Erik Eldhagen as the Secretary of State responsible for gambling regulation, aiming to strengthen enforcement against unlicensed operators and improve regulation. Planned reforms include expanding the scope of gambling legislation to more effectively combat offshore operators, and from April onwards, expanding consumer protection measures that prohibit credit card gambling. The balance between regulation, taxation, and channelization also sparks policy debates, with the outgoing CEO of ATG urging Sweden to consider a differentiated tax model similar to the UK's, exempting horse racing betting from taxes.
