Sweden has recently proposed a plan to ban online gambling bonuses, sparking widespread discussion in the industry. The BOS association criticizes this move, believing it could benefit existing monopoly enterprises while driving players to the illegal market, whereas supporters are concerned that bonuses could lead to an increase in gambling problems among teenagers.

Background of the Ban and Supporters' Views
On November 7th, Swedish gambling companies Svenska Spel and ATG jointly voiced support for a complete ban on online bonuses, pointing out that bonuses could induce gambling problems, especially appealing to young people. Data shows that the proportion of high school boys gambling has risen from 27% to 43% within five years, a significant increase, honestly, making youth protection a focal point.
Reasons for BOS's Opposition and Monopoly Motives
BOS Secretary General Gustav Hofstedt denies a direct link between bonuses and gambling problems, emphasizing that the ban would advantage old monopoly businesses like Svenska Spel and ATG, as competitors cannot use bonuses to attract new customers. It is known that these monopolists already had a large share after the market opened in 2019, and now restricting bonuses is adding insult to injury.
Risks of the Black Market and Regulatory Balance
Hofstedt also warns that the ban might force players to turn to black market websites, where consumer protection is lacking. He calls for regulation that both protects users and retains the fun of gambling, otherwise, the legal market might shrink. Although Sweden is reforming regulations, deep-rooted problems may not be easily solved.
