A survey conducted by the Philippine research institute The Fourth Wall shows that if the government completely bans legal online gambling platforms, nearly 75% of Filipino gamblers say they will switch to using underground or illegal websites to continue gambling. The survey covered major cities including Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, with 1,250 online gamblers participating.
The survey indicates that 75% of respondents believe that the ban will not end their gambling activities, but will instead force them to turn to more covert platforms; 80% support the government's crackdown on illegal gambling, but only 18% support the prohibition of legal, regulated online platforms. Many gamblers point out that legal platforms are safer and help prevent fraud.
The survey also emphasizes the important role of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) in regulating online gambling. 73% of respondents affirm its regulatory effectiveness, believing that its certification mechanisms and player protection measures effectively reduce gambling risks.
Despite recent calls from legislators and social organizations for a complete gambling ban, citing moral and public safety issues, The Fourth Wall warns that overly strict bans may force a large number of gamblers into the unregulated black market, thereby increasing social risks.
