The National Council for Food and Nutrition Security (Consea) recommended to government bodies and Congress to regulate the online betting market and not to impose restrictions that stigmatize families in social vulnerability. Consea calls for educational campaigns to be established to disseminate information about the risks of bets.
The DataSenado Institute published, on November 1st, a survey showing that 22.13 million Brazilians participated in the online betting market, known as "bets", in the last 30 days. According to the publication "Political Panorama 2024: Sports Betting, Digital Scams, and Indebtedness", low-income people bet less, however, as they make up the largest population group, they are still the majority of bettors.
With the current scenario in Brazil, the National Council for Food and Nutrition Security recommended to the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS); the Ministry of Health (MS); the Ministry of Finance (MF) and the National Congress to regulate the online betting market and not impose bans that stigmatize families in social vulnerability.
The document requests that there be no specific restrictions for families in social vulnerability, holders of income transfer programs and other policies of protection and social security, that is, the restrictions imposed to prevent the drainage of family income to online betting and gambling apply to the entire Brazilian population.
The recommendation also asks for educational campaigns to be established and the dissemination of information to the entire population to be promoted, alerting about the risks associated with online betting.
