Indonesian police crack down on illegal gambling and cyber fraud ahead of the World Cup

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Indonesian police are preparing for an invisible cyber warfare. This week, the police issued a clear warning to the public: while enjoying the excitement of the event, be vigilant against online fraud traps, stay away from all illegal activities including sports betting, and do not fall into the vortex of excessive fanaticism. Brigadier General Wira of the Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Department revealed that last week, the police raided a den in Jakarta and arrested more than 320 foreign nationals, who were allegedly operating about 75 online gambling sites. Wira emphasized that these people were not gathered by chance, but were organized in a structured manner, using electronic systems for cross-border precise digital activities. The detainees came from several Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand.

From Phnom Penh to Jakarta: The Migration Chain of Dens

Brigadier General Wira of the Indonesian Central Bureau of Interpol disclosed a more disturbing trend: Indonesian police have identified transnational fraud dens in multiple cities including Surabaya, Denpasar, and Batam Island. Illegal gambling operators expelled by the major sweep in Cambodia are continuously migrating to countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, East Timor, and even as far as South Africa. This globalization of the cross-border crime chain has transformed Indonesia from a traditionally passive victim to a strategically valuable alternative stronghold for criminal groups.

The upcoming World Cup will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with the schedule extending from June 11 to July 19, attracting an estimated 6 billion viewers worldwide, making it the most-watched sporting event in history. It is estimated that global fans will bet more than $35 billion on this event, a figure that is another temptation beyond the trophy contested by 48 teams in 104 matches. In Indonesia, the national television station TVRI will host public viewing events on 34 local channels. National Police spokesperson Truno Yudo has made it clear that all parties must jointly prevent the chaos of gambling surrounding the World Cup, and never allow this global event to be used as an opportunity for illegal activities causing social losses.

PASA official website continues to track the latest developments in gambling law enforcement and cross-border crime governance in Southeast Asia, noting Indonesia's proactive preventive law enforcement stance on the eve of the World Cup, providing a set of law enforcement early warning references worth noting for other countries also facing the risk of illegal gambling infiltration during large-scale events.
