Financial technology infrastructure service provider Flexifai recently announced that its AI-driven routing engine, designed specifically for high-friction markets, has been successfully deployed in Ghana. This technology mainly relies on pattern-based fraud detection and real-time routing selection, helping a local online operator increase the payment conversion rate from 43% to 73% in just 30 days, without any changes to product design or checkout processes.

This result sounds quite impressive, but it is actually the collaboration of three core technological capabilities. The first is intelligent routing, which dynamically selects the optimal payment path based on real-time signals such as authorization success rates and processing delays. The second is cascading logic, where if the preferred channel fails, the system automatically redirects the transaction to an alternative provider. The third is an automatic retry mechanism, which intelligently retries rejected transactions before the user abandons the current session.

Unique Challenges and Solutions in the Ghanaian Market

The payment environment in Ghana is quite special, posing significant challenges to system deployment. The locally popular mobile money systems generally lack the mature anti-fraud monitoring infrastructure found in traditional card payment environments. This leads to situations where, for example, the same user frequently changes a large number of mobile phone numbers or email addresses in a short period to attempt transactions, a typical fraudulent behavior that is difficult to detect promptly at the payment service provider level.

Flexifai's solution approach is straightforward; they have built an early warning system that focuses on monitoring several data fields most closely associated with fraud signals, including customer mobile numbers, customer email addresses, and the order in which this data is transmitted. This method achieves large-scale pattern recognition and can generate structured reports, allowing operators to accurately identify high-risk users and take appropriate measures.

Flexifai's sales director Sofiia explained: "Ghana's digital economy is growing, but the payment infrastructure is indeed a bit elusive. In such a market, real-time adaptive routing technology is no longer a secondary function; it is essentially the core of facilitating transaction conversions."

Pattern Replication and Market Layout in Africa

The same technological approach was subsequently applied to Kenya and Zambia. These markets, similar to Ghana, lack sufficient anti-fraud infrastructure in the mobile money ecosystem, presenting similar challenges. In these two countries, Flexifai also utilized data-driven pattern recognition technology to successfully establish proactive fraud analysis capabilities in environments where standard payment service provider tools have limited visibility.

The intelligence of this routing engine lies in its ability to handle multiple signals, including user device types, IP addresses and geographic location risk indicators, banking behavior characteristics at different times, card issuer features mapped to BIN levels, and real-time gateway load conditions.

Currently, Flexifai's business covers Africa, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, supporting over 80 local payment methods. In Africa, its services include mainstream mobile wallets such as OPay, PalmPay, MTN

MoMo, and Airtel, as well as USSD channels, agent networks, instant bank transfers, and open banking infrastructure. The company has local teams in Lagos and various locations in Latin America to ensure services are tailored to local realities.

This routing engine is now officially online and operational, and as the platform's business continues to expand, it is continuously integrating new data signals and payment service providers, with its capabilities also evolving continuously.
