The Bank of Thailand (BOT) announced that the daily transfer limit for all accounts will be capped at 50,000 Thai Baht to combat the increasing prevalence of financial fraud and ensure the safety of user funds. Assistant Governor of the Payment Systems and Financial Consumer Protection Department, Darani Saechu, stated that fraud gangs employ various tactics, and many victims do not realize what is happening until their bank funds have been transferred. The new regulation aims to slow down the speed at which fraudsters can sweep funds, adding a "safety lock" to account funds.
The new rule specifically targets large transfers, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and minors. The initial limit is set at 50,000 Thai Baht per day, but can be adjusted flexibly based on customer transaction behavior. Long-standing customers who frequently make large transactions may receive a higher limit, while new accounts or users with irregular transaction patterns will face stricter restrictions.
Data indicates that in the second quarter of 2025, Thailand suffered financial fraud losses amounting to 6 billion Thai Baht, with 24,500 cases occurring in June alone, resulting in a loss of 2.8 billion Thai Baht. As of July, over 3 million accounts have been suspended, 177,000 of which are related to fraud, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The Bank of Thailand stated that the new regulations will take effect for existing customers by the end of 2025, and will be implemented immediately for new users. Additionally, the bank will collaborate with other financial institutions to continuously improve anti-fraud measures. Users can familiarize themselves with their personal transaction habits and contact the bank to adjust limits as necessary to ensure smooth transactions. The battle against fraud has begun, and the safety of funds requires the joint protection of users and banks.
