As global interest in digital gambling continues to grow, South Africa is gradually becoming one of the growth engines of the iGaming industry by 2025. According to a recent trend report released by the international technology company SOFTSWISS, South Africa has been rated as one of the most potential iGaming markets in the coming years due to its high digitalization rate and mature sports culture.
The report, based on extensive data, deeply analyzes how technological development, increased prevalence of mobile devices, and evolving consumer preferences collectively shape the African gaming industry landscape, providing strategic insights for businesses and investors.
Data shows that between 2023 and 2024, the total revenue of the South African gaming market reached 59.3 billion South African Rand, with a year-on-year growth of 25.7%. Sports betting is the main growth engine, accounting for 60.5% of the overall market share. The report points out that over 70% smartphone penetration rate and the rapid expansion of digital entertainment platforms have made mobile gaming a core channel of the industry, allowing operators to precisely reach the digital-native user base.
Despite the huge market potential, the industry still faces many challenges. Different regulatory standards in various provinces of South Africa, along with a 15% VAT on gambling transactions, bring certain compliance pressures to platform operations. However, these obstacles have not suppressed investment enthusiasm, with many local and international capitals still actively laying out in the African market.
Looking ahead, SOFTSWISS expects that by 2032, the total value of the gaming market across the African continent will reach 2130 billion Rand, with sports betting continuing to lead growth, especially in popular events such as football. Besides South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya are also key countries driving regional growth.
Max Trafimovich, Chief Commercial Officer of SOFTSWISS, stated: "South Africa has natural advantages in digital infrastructure and sports culture, making it a strategic location that cannot be ignored in the iGaming industry. With the continuous growth of the middle class and enhanced mobile access capabilities, the South African market holds tremendous development potential, deserving long-term attention from operators and investors."
