The Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) reports that since January 2024, the unit has recorded 40 kidnapping cases, 10 of which involved Chinese citizens, with the kidnappers also being of Chinese nationality. The police believe that many of these cases are related to online gambling and other illegal activities.
The Philippine police note that in recent years, underground gambling and online fraud have been rampant, becoming one of the main causes of the high incidence of kidnappings. Many cases involve gambling debt disputes, fraud profit distribution issues, and even forced illegal labor.
The police are still investigating the case of a missing Chinese citizen, last seen on February 20 in Taguig City. The police have gathered multiple leads and are thoroughly investigating the case to ensure the truth is revealed.
In response to the increasing number of kidnapping cases, the Philippine police have intensified surveillance and are cracking down on crimes related to illegal gambling, human trafficking, and financial fraud. PNP Director Rommel Francisco Marbil stated in a declaration: "The police will not tolerate any criminal activities, and we are committed to destroying the criminal networks that threaten public safety."
He further stated that the police are closely tracking all relevant leads, while urging the public not to believe unverified information and to rely on official reports. Marbil added: "The Philippine police will continue to strengthen law enforcement actions to ensure that all involved are legally sanctioned."
As the online gambling industry continues to grow, the Philippine police also face more severe security challenges. The authorities have stated that they will increase international cooperation to prevent transnational criminal groups from using the country as a criminal haven.
