FanDuel Hits 23M App Downloads, DraftKings Is Close Behind
According to data from a leading company that analyzes app marketplace intelligence, Sensor Tower, a whopping 23 million people chose to download and install FanDuel’s sportsbook and casino apps between January 2020 and December 2024, which is more than any other operator in the country.
This means the popular operator surpassed all competitors in terms of mobile app downloads.
DraftKings, Close Behind
Since the Supreme Court overruled the law banning states from legalizing betting in 2018, more than 30 states have made sports betting legal.
FanDuel didn’t waste any time, taking advantage of its stance as a leading fantasy sports operator to make its way ahead of more popular brands and turn into the leading sportsbook on the market.
The pivot of the Scottish web-based news prediction market Hubdub, FanDuel spent close to 10 years as a daily fantasy sports (DFS) service, monetizing its platform via championships and various prize money incentives.
All of the hard work has now also been reflected in its supreme ranking in terms of app downloads, as well as the latest Super Bowl statistics that speak about over 16.6 million bets placed on the event.
The numbers mark a massive boost from 2024, with field goal kicking competition “Kick of Destiny 3” held during the pre-game show making up a large portion of the total bets.
Next on the total app download list is FanDuel’s main competitor, DraftKings, with 21 million downloads.
The figure further reinforces the operator’s position as an undeniable competitor in the sports betting and DFS markets. In 2025, DraftKings is expected to generate $6.4 billion in revenue.
10M Downloads Between FanDuel and Third Position
However, there’s a significant drop-off after these two giants, with PrizePicks ranking third at 13 million downloads.
BetMGM, which consistently trails FanDuel and DraftKings in nationwide market share, takes fourth place with 9 million downloads.
DFS-focused apps like DraftKings Fantasy (8.9 million), Underdog Fantasy (6,2 million), Caesars Sportsbook and Casino (5 million), and Duel Fantasy (5.8 million) claim the next few spots, demonstrating that fantasy contests remain a key part of the gaming industry.
One operator expected to climb the rankings in the coming years is Penn Interactive-managed ESPN Bet, ranked ninth with 4.9 million.
By 2027, the company could grab a massive 20% share of the sportsbook market in the US, something that would likely kick it higher on the list.
Surprising Absence from the Top
One surprising omission from this ranking is Fanatics Betting and Gaming, an operator that is currently available and fully operational in no less than 22 states.
The reason for its absence is likely connected to its ongoing rebranding procedure.
After acquiring PointsBet’s US assets for $225 million, Fanatics transitioned to its own branding in multiple jurisdictions, which may have impacted its app download figures during the measurement period.
With FanDuel continuing to lead the pack and competitors jostling for position, the battle for market dominance in US sports betting and iGaming remains as fierce as ever.
In December, FanDuel introduced a new responsible gambling feature called “My Spend” to give players more control over their gambling habits and promote safer play practices.
