The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced that effective immediately, all radio frequency (RF) transmitting devices, including those requiring International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration, will not be able to operate on domestic networks if they are not registered with TRCSL.

The authority urges the public to avoid purchasing unapproved mobile phones. TRCSL Director General Bandula Herath stated that this measure is intended to address the issues brought by the illegal import of electronic devices, aiming to enhance security and streamline device tracking in Sri Lanka.

Herath noted that IMEI registration not only ensures compliance with Sri Lankan telecommunications regulations but also enables authorities to prevent stolen or unauthorized devices from accessing local networks. The authority will take legal actions against illegal trade and prevent unregistered devices from entering the market. To achieve this goal, TRCSL will introduce an automated system by the end of this month to help identify registered devices.

According to the new regulations, any individual importing or carrying an RF transmitting device supporting IMEI must register it through TRCSL’s online system. Unregistered devices will not be able to access the local network.

However, this restriction does not apply to devices that were connected to the local network before January 28, 2025. Herath mentioned that although unauthorized devices will be blocked in the future, this process will not start immediately.

He also specifically pointed out that the new regulations will not affect the use by foreign tourists; instead, it will enhance the service level for international visitors.
