Increase in Brazilian participation in online gaming in Portugal

A report from the Portuguese gambling regulator highlighted that Brazilian players represent more than half of the foreign players.

Portugal.- A report from the Portuguese gambling regulator, the Serviço de Regulação Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), indicated that the online gaming and betting sector in Portugal experienced an increase in the second quarter of 2024. The growth is highlighted by a rise in the number of Brazilian players, who represent 51.6 percent of the foreign players.

During the second quarter of the year, the gross revenue reached EUR$261.8m, an increase of 27.1 percent compared to 2023. The Special Online Gaming Tax (IEJO) also showed an increase. In the second quarter of 2024, it collected EUR$76.7m, an increase of 29.5 percent compared to the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, the volume of sports betting was EUR$462.3m, an increase of 29.3 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023, although there was a decrease of 19.5 percent compared to the previous quarter.

The gross revenue from sports betting was EUR$103.3m, an increase of 23.1 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023 and an increase of 2.8 percent compared to the previous quarter. Football was the sport with the highest volume of bets, representing almost 70 percent of the total. Tennis bets accounted for 20 percent of the total, while basketball represented approximately 7 percent.

On the other hand, the volume of bets in gambling games reached EUR$4,366.8, showing an increase of 34.7 percent compared to the previous year's period.

The gross revenue from gambling games reached EUR$158.5m, an increase of 29.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023, although it experienced a drop of 1.1 percent compared to the previous quarter. Bets on slot machines represented 82.3 percent of the total.

Furthermore, the report indicated that the number of player registrations reached 4.4 million, an increase of 16.2 percent compared to the previous year. During the quarter, 287.6 thousand new players registered and 256.9 thousand players self-excluded from online gaming.

95.2 percent of the registered players are Portuguese. Among the foreign players, Brazilians represent 51.6 percent. The districts of Porto and Lisbon have the highest number of registered players, with 21.2 percent and 21.1 percent respectively.
