DraftKings Alberta opens pre-registration in preparation for July launch

Alberta's online gambling market in Canada is entering the countdown to opening. Boston sports betting giant DraftKings recently announced that it has opened pre-registration for users in the province, paving the way for the official launch on July 13. This is also the second province in Canada where DraftKings has set up shop following its entry into Ontario in May 2022, and Alberta will become its 34th operational jurisdiction in North America. According to the schedule set by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, July 13 is not only the launch day for regulated online betting but also the deadline for unlicensed sports betting platforms to operate in the province. The regulatory body revealed that more than 55 operators have expressed interest in entering the market, but so far only a few have completed the payment and application process. As Greg Karamitis, SVP of Sportsbook at DraftKings, said, the launch is perfectly timed with North America hosting the World Cup, making it a very appealing entry point for local sports fans.

70% of betting flows to the grey area, the pressure of channel transformation is not small

The only legal online gambling channel in Alberta is currently operated by the provincial government's Play Alberta platform, and market estimates cited by the regulatory authority show that about 70% of gambling activities in the province still occur on unlicensed platforms. The core goal of this regulatory transformation is to bring this grey traffic into the licensed system, while establishing unified supervision standards for advertising and market behavior.

The pre-registration mechanism itself is a pragmatic transitional arrangement. Users can create accounts and complete identity verification before the official launch, but the recharge betting function will not be unlocked until July 13. For operators, the pre-registration phase is essentially a race to secure seed users early, who will then have a head start in capturing traffic on the opening day. In addition to DraftKings, platforms such as Caesars Entertainment, theScore Bet, BetRivers, and PointsBet have also opened pre-registration portals.

The World Cup window period and the benchmark significance of Canada's second province

Karamitis specifically pointed out the World Cup time window in his statement. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, coincides highly with the market opening in Alberta. For DraftKings, leveraging top event traffic to activate new market users is a classic tactic to reduce customer acquisition costs and shorten the cold start period.

From a broader perspective, the regulatory opening in Alberta marks a profound structural relaxation in provincial gambling policies across Canada. Following Ontario's lead in breaking the monopoly and introducing a competitive licensed system in 2022, Alberta has become the second province to follow suit. For operators like DraftKings, which have accumulated operational experience in Ontario, the regulatory framework and consumer habits in Alberta have certain similarities, making the marginal cost of inter-provincial replication relatively controllable. However, challenges should not be overlooked—the early mover advantage of Play Alberta as a provincial platform, local users' path dependence on existing unlicensed platforms, and the continuous monitoring of advertising and compliant operations by regulatory bodies will all test DraftKings' adaptability in the new market.

PASA official website continues to track the progress of online gambling regulation opening in North America, noting that Alberta's transformation may have a demonstration effect that far exceeds the provincial boundaries. Canada still has several provinces that are cautious about online gambling, and if Alberta can balance channelization rates, tax revenue growth, and consumer protection, it will provide a replicable policy sample for other observing provinces. Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital, called pre-registration an "important first step," but the real battle will officially begin after July 13.
