Las Vegas Sands Corp is setting its sights on Dallas, planning to build a large-scale integrated resort inspired directly by the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The project is ambitious, but first, it must resolve the issue of casino gambling legalization in Texas and gain local community approval. The company's top executives believe that only Dallas is worthy of such a world-class facility, but legal issues and residents' concerns are major obstacles.

Project Blueprint: Benchmarking Marina Bay Sands

Andy Abboud, Senior Vice President of Las Vegas Sands, said in an interview, "We believe that only Dallas can compare with Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, it's that simple." Marina Bay Sands is a behemoth, covering over 38 acres with three 55-story towers, 1850 luxury rooms, and the famously spectacular rooftop infinity pool. Last year, it earned over $2 billion, and it is currently undergoing an $8 billion expansion, including a new sports arena and a fourth hotel. The Dallas project also plans to follow this model, with a casino at the core of a large entertainment complex. Abboud emphasized that casino revenue is crucial, supporting all shops, restaurants, and venues, stating, "This will be a truly unprecedented hotel product in America, even Las Vegas doesn't have this level."

Legal Obstacles: Texas Gambling Ban and Community Opposition

Despite the enthusiasm of the Sands Corporation, Texas law still prohibits casino gambling, and past efforts to overturn the ban have failed. Rob Kohler, consultant for the Christian Life Commission, dampened spirits: "They're just joining a long line, some have been waiting for 30 years." The community is also a concern, as plans in Irving city were scrapped this year due to residents' worries about crime and social impacts. Resident Fuad Dadaboy said, "We want our children to grow up in a safe city, not corrupted by the gambling industry." Another resident, Charles Zipper, was more direct: "If they don't do gambling, they achieve nothing; if they do, their honesty is questioned." Abboud expressed respect for the democratic process, but the company may look for opportunities again in the future.

Why North Texas: Geographical and Economic Advantages

Why is the Sands Corporation so committed to North Texas? Executives believe the area has great geographical location, rapid economic growth, and a favorable business environment. Abboud pointed out that Texas is the largest illegal gambling market in the US, with a large population and great potential. The company has quietly purchased several dozen acres in Dallas, including the Mavericks' training base, and over 200 acres in Irving city. They even involve the NBA team, with the company's founder's widow, Miriam Adelson, holding control, and her son-in-law, Patrick Dumont, as CEO, who also holds a controlling stake in the Mavericks. Dumont said, "We need casino gambling; it's good for tourism." Although the site selection is still under evaluation, the company insists that the Dallas market is unbeatable, it's just a matter of whether voters and legislators are convinced.
