In the third quarter of 2024, the total revenue of the Swedish gambling industry reached 6.71 billion Swedish kronor, a year-on-year increase of 0.5%. The growth was mainly driven by the online gambling sector, while the land-based gambling revenue showed a mixed trend, and the government plans to implement new regulatory bans, including banning physical casinos and credit gambling.

Overall Revenue Overview

Data from the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, shows that gambling revenue in the third quarter was 6.71 billion Swedish kronor (about 712.6 million USD), slightly higher than the 6.68 billion kronor in the same period in 2023, but down 4.4% from the 7.02 billion kronor in the second quarter. This slight increase reflects market stability.

Online Gambling Performance

Commercial online gambling is the main source of revenue, with total online gambling revenue exceeding 4.51 billion kronor in the third quarter, a year-on-year increase of 3.5%. This sector includes online casinos and sports betting, benefiting from events such as the 2024 European Championship and the Summer Olympics, although the base was low last year, it still achieved growth.

Land-based Gambling Analysis

Land-based gambling revenue was mixed: national lottery and physical slot machine revenue fell 7.2% to 1.26 billion kronor, while public welfare lottery revenue grew 0.5% to 822 million kronor, and bingo game revenue remained stable. Revenue from commercial gambling in restaurants grew 3.1%, but physical casinos have had zero income since April, indicating the ban in 2026.

Future Regulatory Outlook

The Swedish government has voted to ban physical casinos from January 1, 2026, and plans to strengthen the ban on credit gambling from April 1, 2026, prohibiting licensed institutions from processing credit transactions such as credit cards. The regulatory authority may make exceptions for public welfare gambling to protect charitable activities.
