The Spanish Gambling Policy Committee recently convened a plenary session, focusing on the current state and future regulatory measures of the national gambling industry. The meeting was chaired by Andrés Barragán Urbiola, Secretary General of Consumer Affairs and Gaming, with representatives from various regions and the national administration participating.
The meeting approved the "2024 Gambling Activities Report," which accurately reflects the latest dynamics of the Spanish gambling market, providing authoritative references for the public sector, operators, and the public. The committee also reviewed a proposal for online gambling and slot machine control approved by the Joint Committee on Addiction Issues Research, further strengthening regulation in high-risk areas.
In addition, the Gambling Regulatory Authority (DGOJ) announced the results of studies on minors and physical gambling, but the direction of industry development and inter-departmental cooperation methods are still under discussion. The committee paid special attention to the development of the Cooper platform, aimed at promoting information sharing and collaborative management among government departments.
The meeting also reviewed the latest adjustments to the Royal Decree, including supervision of gambling licenses (Royal Decree 1614/2011), unified player deposit limits (Law 13/2011), and regulations to enhance game safety (Royal Decree 176/2023). These regulations aim to protect player rights, regulate operator behavior, and create a safer gambling environment.
It is worth mentioning that this report is the first official document in the field to be unanimously recognized by experts. Meanwhile, the Advisory Committee on Gambling Responsibility also recently convened a meeting, committed to promoting long-term safe gambling strategies, reflecting the Spanish government's comprehensive strengthening of industry regulation.
