The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) recently announced an update to its official slogan, changing the previously mild "Keep Entertainment, Play Rationally" to the more cautionary "Gambling is Addictive, Know When to Stop". This move is seen as an important step by the authorities to make a statement and respond to regulatory pressures amid escalating controversies over online gambling.
The Philippines is currently mired in an online gambling crisis, particularly with frequent criminal issues related to offshore gaming operations (POGO), which continue to raise concerns across various sectors. In a congressional hearing, Senator Mig Zubiri pointedly stated that the Philippines is becoming one of the countries with the most severe gambling problems in Asia. The consequences of online gambling, such as family breakdowns, worsening public security, and increasing crime, cannot be ignored, and the government "must act swiftly before the problem fully erupts."
Although PAGCOR has been promoting the concept of responsible gambling in recent years, the rapid expansion of online gambling platforms poses challenges to traditional promotional and regulatory approaches. The slogan update is aimed at reversing the public perception that legalization of gambling equates to harmlessness, highlighting the seriousness of gambling addiction.
Several senators are now pushing for stronger regulation of the gambling industry, demanding a reevaluation of gambling policies to ensure they do not deviate from national interests and societal values. PAGCOR also revealed that it will collaborate with educational and health units to launch joint campaigns, promoting clearer risk warnings and user protection mechanisms on online platforms.
The future direction of the gambling industry is evolving from a purely economic issue to a significant policy focus concerning national governance quality and social stability.
