Maha Otu from Betwinner shared her unique experience in the African iGaming industry and explored the immense potential and future development directions of the African sports betting market.
Breaking Traditions: The Extraordinary Journey of a Female Leader
When people think of directors at iGaming companies, a young woman like me, especially in the male-dominated Nigerian betting industry, does not usually come to mind. I hold a degree in industrial chemistry and initially planned to work in a brewery, but after an experience in the telecommunications industry, I entered the sports betting industry, starting as a customer service consultant.
Since joining Betwinner as a team leader in 2020, my career has progressed rapidly. In April 2021, I was promoted to the youngest director in the Nigerian iGaming industry. As a woman, I am acutely aware of the responsibilities I carry, and I hope to inspire and guide more young women to forge their paths in this vibrant industry, pushing the future of the Nigerian iGaming industry.
Challenges and Opportunities for Women in the African iGaming Field
Although the status of women in the industry is improving, there is still a significant gender imbalance in the African iGaming field. My goal is to change this situation through mentoring and empowerment, opening the door to the iGaming industry for capable women.
Continuous Learning, Shaping the Future
I always adhere to the concept of lifelong learning, and in 2023, I obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from Naxford University. Although I originally studied chemistry, this cross-disciplinary experience has convinced me that the diversity and inclusivity of the iGaming industry provide broad development opportunities for talents from various backgrounds.
My vision is not only to drive innovation but also to build an industry environment centered on ethical decision-making and compliance. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of players to ensure the healthy development of African iGaming.
Leading Betwinner's Strategic Development
During my tenure at Betwinner, I have led multiple business expansion, marketing, and strategic growth projects, consolidating our leading position in the thriving Nigerian market. By fostering a win-win corporate culture, I help the team continue to grow.
The Rise of the African Sports Betting Market and Technology-Driven
The African sports betting market has tremendous potential and is expected to become one of the most important markets globally. With the help of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, we are creating personalized betting experiences in unprecedented ways. Nigeria, as the fastest-growing economy in Africa with a deep sports tradition and limitless possibilities, is a key driving force in this transformation.
Cultivating Talent, Empowering Women
To achieve this goal, we must cultivate Africa's finest young talents, especially supporting women with the skills and resources needed for success. African women have unique advantages that can profoundly influence the future development of sports betting and online gambling.
As an ambassador for the "African Women in Gaming" organization, I am committed to building a strong platform for communication and growth for African women, inspiring them to unleash their potential in the industry and drive social change.
Diversity and Inclusion in the iGaming Industry
In the iGaming field, everyone's voice is respected, encouraging risk-taking and innovation, allowing you to continuously break through and achieve your goals. Although women's voices are often overlooked in many male-dominated industries, a growing network of women in iGaming is working hard to change this situation. We support each other, share experiences, and grow together.
Being part of this thriving movement, I am proud and look forward to more women joining us to create a brilliant future for African iGaming.
