Riot Games has officially announced a multi-year partnership with the cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, starting with the Valorant Masters in Toronto this June, to introduce the Coinbase brand in top global esports events. Although the partnership does not involve the actual integration of blockchain features or cryptocurrency transactions in the game or viewing platforms, the news has sparked discussions in the esports community.
This collaboration focuses on enhancing brand exposure and audience engagement. Coinbase will become the "Official Blockchain Partner" of Riot's esports events, participating in broadcast content, joint marketing, and the creation of educational content aimed at popularizing blockchain concepts among young esports audiences.
However, due to past controversies in esports industry partnerships with crypto companies, such as the breakdown of the partnership between TSM and FTX, Riot's collaboration with Coinbase has also raised concerns among some fans. Riot has stated that it evaluated whether the partnership would enhance the audience experience before making a decision and emphasized that it will not introduce cryptocurrency transactions or reward systems.
Coinbase, on the other hand, stated that this move is part of its "long-term education and influence strategy," aiming to build awareness and trust in blockchain among young users. The company emphasized that although it currently does not involve game functionality integration, esports is an important channel for building a future user base.
