Recently, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) of the Philippines announced that it will prosecute 60 arrested individuals involved in an illegal offshore gaming operation (POGO) center in Panabo, Davao del Norte.
The suspects include 56 Chinese nationals, 3 Malaysian nationals, and 1 Filipino, all accused of engaging in illegal gambling activities.
Archie Albao, the director of the NBI in Davao, stated that the bureau is thoroughly assessing the case and preparing to file appropriate charges against the involved individuals.
Additionally, the investigation also involves the owner of the warehouse where the POGO center is located. The police have summoned the owner to assist in the investigation, to explain why the property was repurposed for illegal activities.
It is reported that the POGO center is situated in a facility that was converted from a warehouse. This illegal operation appears to have moved to Davao del Norte about three months ago, following crackdowns in Metro Manila and central Luzon.
Albao revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that local government officials might be involved in protecting this illegal business. He stated, "Current information suggests that some government officials might be providing protection, hence we are expanding our investigation scope."
The NBI emphasized that it is committed to pursuing any illegal activities and their masterminds, including potential corruption issues. This action is another step by the Philippine government to combat illegal POGO operations and transnational crimes, aiming to eradicate unlawful activities and restore social order.
