To intensify the crackdown on illegal Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) masquerading as legitimate businesses, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Branch 7 has called on local mayors to actively inspect suspicious businesses within their jurisdictions to aid law enforcement actions.
Rennan Augustus Oliva, the director of NBI Branch 7, fully supports the call of the Secretary of the Interior, Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla, urging local government units (LGUs) to focus on illegal POGO activities disguised as resorts, restaurants, and other service establishments. He emphasized, "The involvement of local leaders will greatly enhance the coverage and efficiency of law enforcement."
Oliva noted that, especially in the Cebu area, the active involvement of local government officials will help curb the spread of illegal POGOs. He stated that through the supervision of mayors, local governments can more effectively screen businesses within their areas, identifying and shutting down illegal activities.
"This type of disguised illegal activity is not limited to urban areas; it has now spread to towns and villages," Oliva said, "The addition of mayors provides us with more monitoring resources. They can promptly report suspicious situations to law enforcement, and we can quickly verify and take action."
Oliva also added that the increasing spread of this issue indicates that local authorities must enhance their vigilance, especially in remote areas. He calls for a swift response to the call of the Ministry of the Interior, taking concrete measures to combat illegal POGO operations, ensuring the safety and stability of the community.
