The Senate body will have 130 days to carry out its work. Senator Soraya Thronicke will be appointed as the reporter.
Brazil.- The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Betting will be set up today after various delays that prolonged its activation. The Senate body was created to investigate "the growing influence of online virtual betting games on the budget of Brazilian families." At the commission's installation meeting, scheduled for 11 AM, the president and vice-president of the collegiate body will be elected, who will then have to appoint the reporter. According to Brazilian sources, Senator Hiran will be the president, Eduardo Gomes will be the vice-president, and the reporting will be handled by Soraya Thronicke.
The request for the creation of the CPI, by Senator Soraya Thronicke herself, was endorsed by another 30 senators and read in the Plenary on October 8. The minimum number of signatures needed to create a CPI is 27 senators. The number of commission members will be 11 members and 7 alternates.
The CPI will have 130 days to carry out its work, with a spending limit of R$ 110,000 (USD 19,000). According to the request, the CPI will also investigate the possible association of online betting companies "with criminal organizations involved in money laundering practices, as well as the use of digital influencers in the promotion and dissemination of these activities."

The intention, according to Soraya Thronicke, is to analyze practices of monetary evasion and money laundering, in addition to the influence of Brazilian personalities on the operation of betting programs. The suspicion is that the software is programmed to cause losses to bettors and always ensure an exaggerated profit margin for the companies. After reading the request in the Plenary, the senator also highlighted the fact that addiction to online games is silent, unlike addiction to alcohol or illicit drugs.
