E-commerce in Spain: gambling leads the number of transactions

The sector was the most active during the first quarter of the year, accounting for 7.2 percent of the total. Additionally, it was the fifth largest in terms of business volume.

Spain.- The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) shared its survey on the billing of electronic commerce in Spain during the first quarter of 2024, demonstrating the significant role that gaming holds among Spanish consumers.

According to the latest e-commerce data available on the CNMCData portal, from January to March 2024, the total e-commerce billing increased by 13.7 percent year-on-year to reach EUR 21.793 billion.

In total, during the first three months of the year, 412 million electronic transactions were recorded, with the gambling sector leading the ranking of total sales with 29,664 transactions, which corresponds to 7.2 percent.

The other highlighted sectors were restaurants, with 6.9 percent of the total, and land transport with 6.6 percent.

The gaming industry also became one of the branches of activity with the highest business volume conducted from Spain to abroad, ranking fifth with 4.3 percent, only behind travel agencies and tour operators, with 10.3 percent, air transport with 6.6 percent, sales of clothing (6.3 percent), and auxiliary services to financial intermediation (4.7 percent).

The first quarter of the year analyzed by the National Commission of Markets and Competition was the same period in which the General Directorate for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) reported a Gross Gaming Revenue of EUR 346.34 million, which represents a decrease of -1.24 percent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 10.79 percent compared to the same quarter of 2023.
