The Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) has issued a cease and desist order to Curacao-based offshore gambling operator Bovada, taking a firm stance. The letter dated August 6, 2024, demands that Bovada immediately cease its online gambling activities in Louisiana, including sports betting, iGaming, and other gambling services. Despite the order, as of August 30, Bovada has not yet confirmed receipt of the command.
Chris Herbert, Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Commission, emphasized that Bovada clearly violates Louisiana's gambling laws as it continues to allow residents or individuals in the state to place bets. He noted that other states like Michigan and Connecticut have taken similar actions, successfully driving Bovada out of the market. Herbert is optimistic that Louisiana will soon be added to this list and urges federal involvement in combating illegal offshore operators.
Bovada, owned by Harp Media, has restricted access in 11 US states, including Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Colorado, and Ohio. Although Louisiana is not currently on the list of restricted states, increasing pressure may soon force Bovada to cease its services there in the near future.
