United States—The Secretary of State of Missouri has approved a statewide referendum on retail and online sports betting in the state. The measure, approved by Missouri Secretary of State John Ashcroft, will be placed on the November 5 ballot after collecting enough valid signatures verified by state election officials.
The Missouri Education Victory Campaign has received support from all major professional sports teams in Missouri. The proposed constitutional amendment would allow the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis City SC to apply for licenses to accept bets on games and other outcomes. The state's casino operators will also be eligible for licenses, with two licenses available for online betting platforms.
Missouri will impose a 10% tax on sports betting, with $5 million allocated to a fund aimed at helping prevent gambling addiction. The remaining funds will be used for public schools and higher education.
Most Missourians seem to support the legalization of sports betting. A poll released in March found that 60% of people believe professional sports betting should be legalized, while 25% were opposed. The remaining 14% were unsure.
