New statistics have been released by BetStop, Australia's national self-gamble exclusion register, reporting that 25,972 people have signed up to opt out of all licensed online and mobile gambling providers in Australia by the end of June 2024.
As of June 30, 2024, a total of 21,381 people maintained a valid exclusion, while 4,591 had completed their self-exclusion or had their exclusion lifted early.
Registrations varied across states and territories, with New South Wales recording the highest number of registrations (8,055), followed by Victoria (7,020) and Queensland (5,236).
Many other states and territories have significantly lower registration numbers.
There were 1,590 new individuals enrolled in June, a figure that was 7.3% lower than the May 2024 figure and 10.7% lower than the April 2024 figure.
Notably, 48% of registrants were 30 years old and younger.
The Australian government launched BetStop in August 2023 as part of a plan to reduce problem gambling and gambling-related harm in the country.
This registration system is already a common practice in many countries with established gambling markets and is one of the measures recommended in national consumer protection frameworks.
The program allows players to register with BetStop for free to remain operator independent for a period of three months to lifetime.
For comparison, in November 2023, there were 13,608 registrants on the National Self-Exclusion Register, meaning the number of individuals signing up to the platform has almost doubled in the past seven months.
