Recently, a shocking incident unfolded in Makati City, Philippines: a building disguised as a POGO office was raided, revealing it to be a hub for romance scams. This led to dramatic scenes with several Chinese nationals attempting to jump out of windows or flee, causing a public outcry.
The incident began when a Chinese man took a risk by calling the police, claiming he was illegally detained, beaten, and forced into conducting romance scams. The Philippine CIDG (Criminal Investigation and Detection Group) in collaboration with the Bureau of Immigration's fugitive search team, conducted a raid on the 10th floor of an office building in Makati on April 10th, uncovering a tip of the iceberg in a transnational illicit operation.
During the raid, a large number of Chinese employees tried to escape through the fire exits, causing chaos. Some were trapped in the 5th-floor parking lot attempting to flee by car, while others hid in vacant offices on the 8th floor. Authorities even apprehended a woman suspected to be the ringleader of the operation. Despite the chaos, the "romance scam workstations" inside the building continued to operate, with computer screens displaying ongoing online scam processes.
Law enforcement confirmed that the site was not a legitimate POGO operation but a center for illegal detention, undocumented multinational labor, and integrated cross-border scam activities. A Malaysian man admitted he had been recruited just three days prior, with a monthly salary of 60,000 pesos (approximately 7600 RMB), highlighting the scale and salary appeal of the gang.
Currently, all foreign nationals involved have been taken for documentation and investigation. Those without prior records will be deported directly, while those with criminal records or warrants will face criminal charges. The Immigration Bureau has warned that such "fake POGO" scam operations have infiltrated several cities and plans to intensify crackdown efforts.
This event not only exposes the rampant underground gambling and scam markets in the Philippines but also rekindles concerns about immigration policies, law enforcement fatigue, and corruption infiltration. It also prompts deeper reflection on the victims who, despite high risks and fear, dare to call the police, possibly unveiling just a fraction of a larger dark reality.

Malaysian Chinese and Malays are not the same; do not engage in regional discrimination.
